What is the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC)?

The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) is the global regulating body of the Payment Card Industry and was created to secure payments, payment data and processes globally. Organizations of all sizes must be PCI compliant if they accept payment cards from the five major credit card brands: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and the Japan Credit Bureau (JCB). Compliance with PCI Data Security Standards is required for any organization that stores, processes, or transmits payment and cardholder data and that includes encrypted connections. Companies that are PCI compliant use PKI to secure their encrypted transactions over the internet.
